RDU Thanksgiving Travels

It is almost time for that magical time of year when an estimated 29.3 million people will fly between Friday, November 16 and Tuesday, November 27, 2018, to celebrate Thanksgiving with loved ones. If they live in the Raleigh-Durham area, then you are likely to fly into Raleigh-Durham Airport where it is estimated that more than 300,000 people will begin or end their travels. Here are some tips that you will want to keep in mind before you miss your place at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Buy Your Ticket

Since you have already missed the cheapest time to buy your Thanksgiving flight ticket into RUD because that happened in mid-September, consider flying on Thanksgiving morning. Flights on the actual holiday are usually considerably cheaper than those a day or two ahead of the holiday. If possible, consider extending your stay until Wednesday, November November 28 as prices are likely to fall for that day from holiday highs.

Leave Extra Time

While you will always want to get to the airport at least two hours before your scheduled flight, you will want to be even earlier during the holidays as lines through security can get extremely long. The security professionals at RDU are usually pros at getting people through security in under 20 minutes, so give them a break during your holiday flight by preparing ahead of time. If you are traveling with children, then it usually takes a little longer, so try to arrive even earlier.

Pack Light

With Thanksgiving daily highs often averaging 62 degrees, you may want to pack light for your trip to Durham or Raleigh, North Carolina. If you can, then pack all your stuff for your stay in your carry-on bag eliminating the need to check a bag which is more apt to get lost during your Thanksgiving adventure. Packing in your carry-on also allows you to skip baggage claim and be on your way to Thanksgiving dinner sooner.

Don’t put your loved ones in a position of stop their Thanksgiving plans to pick you up at the RDU Airport. While on an average day, approximately 11.74 percent of flights are delayed, increased traffic and bad weather in other parts of the country can send that number skyrocketing during Thanksgiving. Instead, hire Raleigh-Durham Airport Shuttle to get you safely where you are going. They can get you where you want to be in the Chapel Hill, Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Garnet or another destination within 150 miles of the airport.
